Call for Applications for 3rd Edition of the International Video Art Festival in Addis Ababa Ethiopia

Addis Video Art Festival intends to provide a platform for innovative video art in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The festival will screen throughout the city in a variety of locations including street corners, rooftops, public centers and art centers. By sharing video art in both conventional and non-conventional settings, the festival will reach both the artist community and the everyday passerby. The festival aims to create a dialogue between local, and international artists by encouraging digital media culture.



Theme: MUTUAL PERIPHERY

The border between Ethiopia and Eritrea has reopened after 20 years of shut- down following a war with more than 80000 fatalities. These sister countries were once a unified nation, sharing history, culture and language, the only two countries in the world to follow the thirteen month Julian calendar.

In response to this historic moment the festival seeks videos shorts that examine ideas and interpretations of ‘Mutual Periphery’.

YPN is calling for Moroccan, African and Diaspora video artists for the next Digital Africa screening in Casablanca, Morocco

After Yaounde, London and Tokyo, Yaounde Photo Network (YPN), Cameroon’s platform for photography and lens-based media will be hosting its next Digital Africa screening in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Digital Africa programme stems from a digital media (sound and video art) showcase first curated by Christine Eyene as part of the Africa Utopia Festival (2014) at Southbank Centre, London. It was then expanded as part of YPN’s international collaborations and events. In 2019, YPN partners with the International Biennial of Casablanca (BIC) that will open up its work spaces and host various activities during its incubation phase between biennial editions.

YPN is calling for Moroccan, African and Diaspora video artists to submit video pieces or experiments to be presented at Digital Africa: Casablanca in April 2019. The event will take the form of a video art exhibition and screening, coinciding with the launch of the BIC project space.

Digital Africa: Casablanca will have a dual focus following from the theme of the 2018 biennial that dealt with insular contexts, water narratives relating to seas and oceans, history, migration and cultural hybridity. It will also explore language as a subject matter, vernacular or resulting from colonial legacies, orality, text, literature and coded languages of all sorts.

Interested artists or collectives may send between 1 and 3 video pieces by email in avi, mov, mpeg, mp4 files or via a vimeo or youtube link. Additional information must be emailed along the video file or link in Word or PDF format.

Title of work, date, format, length

Technical specifications

A short biography and statement on the submitted piece/s (both 250 to 500 words) in English or French.

Yaounde Photo Network (YPN) is an independent Cameroonian platform dedicated to photography and lens-based art practices. Launched in September 2016 as an online project alongside the YaPhoto pilot, YPN supports and showcases works by Cameroonian and locally-based photographers and video artists, through a number of activities and initiatives that include exhibitions, screenings, professional encounters, research, workshops and various public events held both in Cameroon and internationally.

OPEN CALL | 20TH CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVAL SESC_VIDEOBRASIL October 3rd to November 17th 2016

Entries are open to artists from the Global South and Portuguese-speaking countries

 Entries for the 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil will open on October 3rd. Up until November 17th, 2016, artists from the Global South and from Portuguese language speaking countries can enter their new or existing artworks in any language or theme, free of charge. The 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil will run from October 2017 to January 2018 at Sesc 24 de Maio, a unit of Sesc São Paulo designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and at Galpão VB, headquarters of Associação Cultural Videobrasil.

The term Global South refers to a field of research used by human sciences and arts that relates to cultural, economic, and political situation of countries and territories on the fringe of mainstream modernization. Aware of the transient character of this notion, Associação Cultural Videobrasil and Sesc São Paulo steer their actions toward constantly reassessing the statute of this concept.

For this open call, the macro-region at hand will comprise countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia (except Japan), Eastern Europe (including the Balkans), the Middle East, Oceania, and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries – the latter being one of the new additions of this 20th edition. Apart from Brazil, the CPLP comprises: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.

The commission will select as many as 50 artists to take part in art shows, video screenings, performances, meetings with artists, public program activities, educational actions, and publication launches set to take place during the Festival, which has cemented its status as the premier Global South art platform. Shortlisted video artworks will be incorporated into the Videobrasil Historical Collection, that comprises works shown in over three decades of Festivals.

In this 20th edition, the featured artists and groups from Brazil and other countries will compete for two types of prizes. An international jury of contemporary art professionals will award 03 (three) Acquisition Awards of BRL 25,000 each to video works that will become part of the Sesc Brazilian Art Collection.

A jury of delegates of residence institutions which are partners of the Festival will award 05 (five) Artist Residency Awards, that will take place throughout 2017. Each award includes  airfare,  accomodation, and a per diem.

Chief curator:

Solange Farkas is curator and director of Associação Cultural Videobrasil, as well as founder of the Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, first held in 1983. She was director and chief curator of the Bahia Museum of Modern Art from 2007 to 2010. She served as a guest curator at the 10th Sharjah Biennial (United Arab Emirates, 2011), the 16th Cerveira Biennial (Portugal, 2011), the FUSO - Annual Video Art Festival (Portugal, 2011 and 2013) as well as the exhibitions La Mirada Discreta: Marcel Odenbach & Robert Cahen (Buenos Aires, 2006); Roteiro Amarrado (CCBB Rio de Janeiro, 2010) and Suspensão e Fluidez (ARCO, Madrid, 2007), the two latter focussing on the work of Brazilian artist Eder Santos; and African Contemporary Art Exhibition (2000), in partnership with Klive Kellner, with artists like William Kentridge, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Sue Williamson, Oladele Ajiboye Bamgboye and Kendell Geers, and, more recently, Amanhã vai ficar tudo bem, by Akram Zaatari (São Paulo, 2016) held at Galpão VB.


Guest curators:

Ana Pato is a curator and researcher. A doctoral student at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), she was chief curator of the 3rd Bahia Biennale (2014) and director of projects of Associação Cultural Videobrasil (2000-2012). She is the author of the bookLiteratura Expandida: arquivo e citação na obra de Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (Expanded Literature: archive and quotation in the work of Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster).

Beatriz Lemos is a curator specialized in arts and digital networks. Holder of a master's degree in Social History of Culture from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), she is the coordinator of the publishing house Sismos Editorial and creator of the online platform Lastro. Since September 2015, she has been a member of Parque Lage Visual Arts School's Visiting Curator Program.

Diego Matos is a researcher, professor and curator. He holds a master's and a doctorate degrees from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP). He was assistant curator for the 29th São Paulo Art Biennial (2010) and for the 18th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil (2013). From 2014 to 2016, he coordinated the Archive and Research Team at Associação Cultural Videobrasil.

João Laia is a writer and curator. He has curated for institutions like Moderna Museet, in Stockholm; the Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art, in Lisbon; Videoex, in Zurich; Delfina Foundation and Whitechapel Gallery, both in London; and Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. He contributes with texts and reviews for publications and vehicles Frieze, Mousse, Flash Art, Terremoto and Público.

TVE OPEN CALL EXTENDED: 22ND FEBRUARY 2015

TVE is making an open call in search of recent artist's film and video to be included in an exchange between Fresh Milk (Barbados), RM, (Auckland) and VAN, Lagos (Nigeria).

Fresh Milk, RM and VAN Lagos, are pleased to welcome submissions of recent film and video works – screenings, installations and expanded cinema – by contemporary artists, to be included in programmes for exchange between Barbados, Auckland and Lagos. Submitted works must have been completed in the last five years and must be made by artists practicing in the Caribbean, Africa or Polynesia.

The foundation of this transoceanic visual exchange (TVE) will be a collection of recent artist’s film and video from each region. However, the final shape and content of the programme will be informed by an open workshop process, which aims to involve and promote discussion within the wider arts communities of each arts initiative.

Working between the Caribbean, Africa and Polynesia, TVE aims to negotiate the in-between space of our cultural communities outside of traditional geo-political zones of encounter and trade. Fresh Milk, VAN Lagos and RM first met as participants in IAI (International Artists Initiated), a programme organized and facilitated by David Dale Gallery, Glasgow, in July 2014. TVE intends to build upon relations established during this initial encounter and open up greater pathways of visibility, discourse and knowledge production between the artist run initiatives and their communities.

Submissions:

Though we might look like a white cube, we are more interested in the potentials of an empty room – a space to gather, to think, to talk, to make, to share… Established in 1997, RM is the country’s longest running artist-run-space. The co-directors are Eleanor Cooper, Melanie Kung, Ziggy Lever, Fleur Sandbrook, Taarati Taiaroa, and co-founder Nick Spratt. Bamako Encounters 2015
Organised by the Malian Ministry of Culture and Institut français, the Bamako Encounters is the first and principal international platform dedicated to African photography on the continent. A veritable platform for discovery, exchanges and interaction, the Bamako Encounters are known as a meeting place for African photographers and other art professionals from across the world. It will take place in Bamako, from 31st October to 31st December 2015.

The Executive Director of the Bamako Encounters is Samuel Sidibe, Director of the National Museum of Mali, who has been directing it since 2009.

The Artistic Director of the 10th Bamako Encounters is Bisi Silva, an independent curator and the Director, Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA, Lagos).

The Pan-African Exhibition, resulting from a call for applications and the selection of artists representing all of the African continent and its Diaspora, is part of the Biennial’s central presentation. In 2015 the title is « TELLING TIME »

The second annual festival hosted in collaboration with A Whitespace continues with work by Nigerian and Indonesian artists, with films being made available by OK Video. The screening will feature 10 years of Indonesian film alongside a curated exhibition of Nigerian videos entitled ‘Owambe’ also featuring an installation from visual artist Odun Orimolade. The screening is supported by the Biritish Council

Owambe
The gathering of people in celebration is an important part of the Nigerian culture. The milestones of life are marked through community gatherings, music and dance, with the ‘Owambe’ being a classic example of this. Owambe translates as "He/She was there", a colloquial expression for a party where the who-is-who in the Nigerian society are in attendance. Visual cues tell of ties to a celebrant through fabric materials that provide uniformity and a sense of belonging. The entire scene is illuminated by shimmering headpieces (gele) and brilliantly coloured costumes (aso ebi), all creatively embroidered and worn with accustomed grace. Reciprocity is practiced in that giving flows in all directions, from the celebrant to the families and the guest; there exists a commonality in the dispersal of gifts.

The Video Art Network Lagos collaborated with invited Nigerian video artists to explore/interpret Owambe, and how Nigerian communities and cultures contribute to the wider cultural discourse of the global community.

In 2014, VAN Lagos was invited as one of the art organizations at the International Artists Initiated (IAI) project, presented by the David Dale Gallery and Studios as part of The Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. This took place alongside the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland.

This is a video installation that simulates an Owambe ambience. Owambe translates as "He/She was there", a colloquial expression for a party where the who-is-who in the Nigerian society are in attendance. Visual cues tell of ties to a celebrant through fabric materials that provide uniformity and a sense of belonging. The entire scene is illuminated by shimmering headpieces (gele) and brilliantly coloured costumes (aso ebi), all creatively embroidered and worn with accustomed grace. Reciprocity is practiced in that giving flows in all directions, from the celebrant to the families and the guest; there exists a commonality in the dispersal of gifts.

As part of this expanded screening and in partnership with A Whitespace the Video Art Network Lagos is pleased to host the International Video Art Festival Lagos running from the 18th December 2014 - 15th January 2015.

 Participating artists include, Jude Anogwih, Buki Bodunrin, Oyinda Fakeye, Emeka Ogboh, Wura-Natasha Ogunji and Uche Okpa Iroha.

These artists explore/interpret Owambe, and how Nigerian communities and cultures contribute to the wider cultural discourse of the global community.
Our guest country in this edition is Indonesia with films generously made available by OK Video. This screening features 10 years of video art in Indonesian.
The programme is being organised and curated by the Video Art Network, Lagos and OK Video , Indonesia with the support of the British Council.

VAN Lagos, is pleased to present BODA- BODA LOUNGE PROJECT, a pan African video art festival in LAGOS. The Boda-Boda Lounge Project is a cross-continental video festival that is featured in over 15 spaces throughout Africa. The Boda-Boda Lounge Project is a collaborative project between VANSA (South Africa), Picha (Congo DRC) and VAN Lagos (Nigeria).
